Kim Benson, Owner & Creativity CoordinatorI became a home organizer after my husband saw someone on Facebook comment that she was overwhelmed and needed to find a professional organizer. He said to me, "Hey, you could do that." I responded, "That's a thing?"
I now realize he was just trying to redirect my "organizing skills" away from his stuff. But lo and behold, it IS a thing. I soon discovered that my knack for problem-solving and organizing, and my passion for homes and interior decorating had a place and a profession. I've long been fascinated with the concept of home and how people live in their homes...how we use and fit into a space, how society defines how we surround ourselves with objects, and how we interact with our environment. I also am intrigued by the intersection of culture, the environment, economics, and architecture/community planning/housing. I grew up a "carpenter's daughter" and played with more hammers than dolls. I loved looking at blueprints and those big decks of paint chips. In high school, I excelled in art, drafting, home economics, and shop/woodworking. The message I got from all of that was that when students enjoy doing what they're learning, they will excel. So I decided to become a teacher. After teaching young adults for 10 years in a traditional setting, I took the leap to teaching adults in the workplace - thus my long career in human resources began. Training staff and managers in the development of new skills and habits became my expertise. My advanced studies in education and counseling taught me to be a coach, and to play the role of partner in another person's learning and development. That coaching skill got a workout when I became a Mom. When my son was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age, I learned everything I could about the condition...and soon discovered, to my surprise/no surprise, that my over-organizing "skills" were really coping strategies for my own ADHD. I was diagnosed soon after. I've since spent lots of time studying the concepts of executive function and routine triggers. And developed "life hacks" to keep my son and I on task. Surprise/no surprise, these life hacks and organizing solutions tend to help anyone who is overwhelmed with the daily mayhem of busy life in a crazy world. I look at this path and believe the whole journey can be called CREATIVITY. I believe there's a fix to most situations...it might not be the one prescribed in books or by experts, it might have to be tweaked, it might evolve, it might be nontraditional, and thus it might be perfect. This path has given me the opportunity to learn skills and lessons, to delve into my passions, and to practice the work that informs my ability to help others in their homes. In my own home, I live with my wonderful husband, our two amazing kids, and three crazy dogs. Our home is my "dream house" simply because we're all there living, laughing, loving, and making memories. Affiliations, Listings, & Awards
